The origins of Valentine's Day
Valentine’s Day is the day when lovers surprise each other with flowers, gifts, and words of love to express how much you care about each other. It has a rich history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The day is named after Saint Valentine, who, according to various legends, dedicated his life to helping loved ones. The most famous story is that he filled secret marriages for young lovers in Rome in the third century A.D., despite a ban on marriages for young men. This was seen as an act of resistance to the authorities and of love transcending the obstacles of time.
Although the origins of Valentine’s Day cannot be precisely traced, it is often seen as a combination of Christian and Roman traditions. The date of Feb. 14 was eventually chosen because it coincides with the holiday honoring St. Valentine, and later it was linked to the beginning of the spring season, a time of renewal and hope.
